Yoga is one of those things that sounds more intimidating than it actually is. Sure, there are lots of crazy balancing and bending poses out there but that’s just one side of yoga. There are lots of easy yoga poses that people of different abilities can do and benefit from. If I’m being honest, I think everyone should be doing yoga! Especially if you are an athlete, yoga can benefit your performance in so many ways.

Why is yoga so great for runners?

A lot of runners shy away from yoga because they fear they are not flexible enough. But, it is important to keep in mind that the purpose of yoga is to gain flexibility and strength over time. As it is often said, yoga is not about touching your toes but rather about the journey down.

The benefits of yoga for runners are:

  • increased range of motion
  • decreased stiffness in muscles and joints
  • strengthen tight muscles
  • improves posture
  • breath awareness
  • greater muscle tone
  • mental focus
  • creates a healthy balance to maintain muscle equilibrium

Yoga can help you develop a greater understanding of your body. The more in tune you are with your body, the more likely you are to pick up on messages your body is sending. And you’re more likely to respond to these messages in a positive way, like pulling back if something hurts or not ignoring a nagging pain etc.

More yoga = less injuries.

Running injuries usually come back to alignment and body symmetry. Regular yoga warm-ups and cool-downs, with easy yoga poses, help maintain proper body alignment, and reduce the risk of injury to knees, ankles and hips. Holding yoga poses for several seconds has the ability to help restore and rebuild connective tissue. This makes yoga ideal for treating injuries as well.
